
Sharon Jane Smith is a songwriter, musician, playwright, and storyteller living in New York City. Born in a small town on the Mississippi, she uses the river as a central theme in much of her work.
Sharon Jane is a founding member and current board member of WOW Café, a women's theater collective in NYC's East Village formed in 1982, which promotes the empowerment of women through the performing arts. She has performed and produced many pieces for the organization.
In addition, Sharon Jane has written and produced plays performed at Performance Space 122 and La Mama Experimental Theatre Club. As a musician she has performed with Holly Hughes, David Cale, Gail Tufts, and numerous East Village performers.
In 1998 Sharon Jane received a New York Foundation for the Arts grant for playwrighting and screenwriting.
She and her father are the subjects of a 2004 documentary film, Time, and the River, by New York filmmaker David Ellsworth.
